Narrative:

An Ode to Virgil. I have taken on board Virgil Abloh’s 3% rule, that is, a new design could be created by changing an original by 3%.

What is clear is that this piece is the only one I have done in graphite pencil as this was the last work I did and I wanted it to stand out, much like Virgil. He broke the rules and was somewhat of a disruptor and for that, I wanted to disrupt this series.

Virgil’s undeniably artistic vision disrupted and reshaped street style. He was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear collection beginning in 2018, and was given increased creative responsibilities across the LVMH brand in early 2021.

This image was taken at the 2021 Met Gala Celebrating In America: A Lexicon Of Fashion. at Metropolitan Museum of Art on September 13, 2021.

Sadly Virgil passed not long after the Met Gala in 2021 however his legacy lives on and now Ibrahim Kamara is at the helm of the late Virgil’s clothing line Off-White™.

PYREX VISION (and Off-White™, which it would later evolve into), was a means of paying homage to what Abloh loved. It lifted from vintage adverts, poster design, Raf Simons, and most often Maison Margiela's '90s heyday.

10 years ago, aged 15, I purchased a PYREX shirt (unfortunately I can’t find any image to embarrass myself). Abloh purchased deadstock Ralph Lauren flannel shirts for $40 each, and screen printed them with the word PYREX and the number 23, an homage to his childhood hero, Michael Jordan. He then sold them for $550 each.

In true Abloh style, I have manipulated the original photograph by 3%.

I would highly recommend you watch his public lecture in Harvard from 2017 Insert Complicated Title Here.
